How to find a Message ID in Gmail / Google Workspace

Updated by 2Fifteen Tech

A Message ID identifies an individual email and helps 2Fifteen Tech support investigate delivery problems or suspicious messages. These steps apply to Gmail and Google Workspace accounts using Gmail in a computer browser.

Find the Message ID

  1. Open Gmail in your browser and open the email you need help with.

  2. If the conversation contains several emails, expand the specific message you want us to check. Each message in the conversation has its own Message ID.

  3. In that message's header, select More (the three vertical dots next to Reply). Use the menu beside the message, rather than the toolbar above the conversation.

  4. Select Show original. Gmail opens the original message details in another tab or window.

  5. Look for Message ID in the summary at the top. You can also search the original headers for Message-ID: using Ctrl + F on Windows or Command + F on Mac.

  6. Select and copy the complete value, including any < and > brackets. Keep the entire ID, even if it wraps onto another line.

For example, the header may look like this. This is an example only:

Message-ID: <unique-message-id@example.com>

Copy the value after Message-ID:. The Gmail address in your browser's address bar is a different identifier and is not what support needs.

What to send support

Share the Message ID with 2Fifteen Tech support, along with the sender, recipient, approximate date and time, and a brief description of the problem. Use the original message you need help with; an ordinary forwarded copy has its own Message ID.

If support asks for the full headers, use Copy to clipboard on the Show original page and share the copied text privately. The original source can contain email addresses and message content.

If you are using a phone or cannot find Show original

Use Gmail in a browser on a computer for these steps. If the message is collapsed, expand it first and check its own three-dot menu. If the option is still missing or the message is unavailable, contact 2Fifteen Tech support with the sender, recipient, and approximate date and time.

If you read your Google Workspace mail in Outlook, use How to find a Message ID in Outlook / Microsoft 365 instead.
