Google Drive says you need access to a file

Updated by 2Fifteen Tech

A link to a Drive file does not always give you permission to open or edit it.

Step 1: Check your account

Check the Google account shown on the page. If the file was shared with your work address, switch to that account and open the link again.

Step 2: Request access

  1. On the You need access screen, click Request access.
  2. Explain what you need the file for and whether you need to view or edit it.
  3. Click Send request.

If you can open the file but cannot change it, ask the owner for Editor access. Viewer and Commenter access do not allow changes to the file's contents.

If the owner needs help

The owner can select the file in Drive, click Share, and add your work email with the appropriate role. Organization policies can restrict external sharing.

Important: Keep business files restricted to the people who need them. Contact us if an approved sharing request is blocked.

Shared drive problems

Ask the shared drive manager to check your access. If adding files fails despite having access, send us the error. Storage, item-count, and upload limits can also prevent additions.

Still blocked?

Contact 2Fifteen Tech support with the file link, your work email, the owner's name if known, and a screenshot of the message.
